How to Remove Black Mold from Drywall

How to Remove Black Mold from Drywall

Mold not only destroys a house‘s interior but also causes various health problems. Black mold is one of the most dangerous types of molds, and if you have it in your house, you should take proper measures to get rid of it as soon as possible. Black mold mostly attacks the drywalls, and its infestation can destroy them completely. Here’s how you can remove and prevent the formation of black mold on your drywall.

Use Borax

The advantage of Borax is that it has a higher pH value than baking soda and vinegar, which makes it ideal for killing the mold on drywall. Follow these simple steps to use Borax for the mold removal process.

  1. Use only one cup of Borax with a gallon of water.
  2. Vacuum and try to remove as much free-standing mold as possible.
  3. Then rub the mold with a borax solution until its signs disappear from the drywall.
  4. Wipe off excess water and let the wall get dry. However, do not wash away the mixture.

Vinegar is a cheaper option than Borax, but it kills less mold in the house. It can be non-toxic, but it is less effective as well. If you’re using vinegar or baking soda for mold removal, allow a cleaner to stay on the mold for a few minutes. This guarantees amazing results and an effective solution. After that, you must keep applying the vinegar on the affected wall for several months to ensure that the spores don’t grow back.

Use Bleach

Mold can also grow on the organic materials present next to mold-covered areas, such as carpets, boxes of cardboards, etc. Therefore, removing such items before treating mold is necessary, and it is better to discard them. Furniture can be preserved if cleaned thoroughly, but it is better to throw it away. Throwing these items away gives plenty of space to work once you remove black mold. There are many mold-killing products available that guarantee a hundred percent result. However, bleach is considered the best way to kill it, especially when you combine bleach with some hard scrubs.

  1. Mix a tiny amount of bleach into a bucket of water.
  2. Use a scrub brush or a sturdy sponge to rub the mold-infested walls with bleach solution until the mold is clean.
  3. Sometimes, after applying the solution, it may be necessary to leave the solution on the wall.
  4. The solution of bleach and water gets the job done every time and when you see mold getting soft, remove it with a dry cloth.

By Using Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is almost as effective as bleach when removing black mold. Its only drawback is that the color of the walls can fade in the worst-case scenario. Before cleaning the wall with Hydrogen Peroxide, it is advisable to apply this on a small area of the wall to ensure the drywall is damaged upon application of the solution. A 3% hydrogen peroxide solution can be directly applied to the wall. However, the best way is to Spray hydrogen peroxide directly and leave it on the surface for 5 to 10 minutes. After that, rub the area to remove the mold, followed by wiping to remove the residue. Repeat this step until you get a clear wall.

Ammonia

If there’s mold growth on your drywall, you can use ammonia as a last resort to kill it. It is a toxic chemical and does not penetrate very well into drywall. Do not use ammonia on walls that have already been washed with bleach, as once combined, these two produce toxic gas. If you have to use ammonia for mold removal, always use clear ammonia.

The methods mentioned above are common ways to get rid of mold formation from your drywall. Just take some precautionary measures and follow the steps shared above properly, and you will get 100% guaranteed results.
